You don’t notice the weight in the e9x until you go sideways. Steering, suspension are spot on w plenty of power.

I don’t know, when I drove one I thought it felt heavy and a little too soft right away, but holy shit... that engine. I kind of see the E90 as the best iteration of the M5 more-so than an M3

The E46 feels light, agile, and aggressive without feeling uncomfortable, but the engine lacks a lot of character compared to the 65.

I mean you’re not wrong it is a heavy car. I just didn’t notice it as much as other cars in the same weight class. To your point about the E39, same thing there. I don’t feel the weight, the E39 M5 is the most fun “big” car I have ever driven.

I owned both an E90M3 and an E46M3 for a short while. I ditched the E90 and kept the E46. I’m in love with the E46, including the engine. It does not have the balls or the sound of the S65, but I love the linear power delivery and that smooth raspy sound. My opinion like most is biased as the E46 has been a gem and the E90, well I think I just got a bad one/one that was not properly maintained early in its life.

EDIT: My E90 also had the active suspension, might be why I thought it felt lighter.

Oh it definitely hides the weight really well and I’m sure much of my impression was tainted by driving it back to back with my track prepped FR-S. I guess it all depends which side of the sports car vs fast luxury car continuum you want the M3 to fall on. They’ve been slowly moving from one side of the scale to the other and I kind of feel the E46/E9x change is about when it crossed the midpoint.

And yeah the E39 is a great example, my 540i certainly does not feel anywhere close to two tonnes.

Don’t misunderstand, the S54 is a fantastic engine (one of best ever fitted to a road car) but the S65 is a masterpiece.

Stop, BMW has the best convertibles, top up or down. And I hate bmw, but they did well on them. Every other companys verts has some major compromise looks wise.
